Car Expert journalist Anthony Crawford confesses up front that he has a long-held affinity for Range Rovers, sparked by his father’s love of English-built cars. He feels that despite the “veritable feast of high-performance premium SUVs...there’s still nothing quite like a Range Rover Vogue for presence, ride comfort, and off-road capability”. And now, after getting behind the wheel of the 2020 Range Rover Vogue P400, he’s happy to report his admiration for the brand remains strong.


The Range Rover Vogue P400 features a 3.0-litre inline-six with both turbo- and supercharging working together with mild-hybrid technology, offering both brisk performance and impressive economy. Crawford declares that while not so many years ago a full strength Range Rover “wasn’t complete without a large V8 under the bonnet, this new mild-hybrid six is a game changer”.

Crawford was impressed with how quickly it gets out of the blocks with no discernible lag, with the big Range Rover able to hustle from 0-100km in a satisfying 6.3 seconds, and the effortless way it conquers even the steepest hills. The eight-speed transmission delivers a super smooth ride, while throttle control and pedal feel allow for precise inputs. It doesn’t take Crawford long to develop an addiction to the powertrain, “not just for the way it goes but for its genuine efficiency”.

Believing Range Rover has long held the upper hand against its fiercest rivals when it comes to ride comfort, Crawford claims that nothing has changed with the Vogue P400. The electronic air suspension is as good as it gets and “bumps and broken road simply aren’t felt inside the cabin. So much so, you’ll find yourself barely slowing down for speed bumps”.


Climb aboard the Range Rover and Crawford says you’ll understand what all the fuss is about: “It’s luxurious but tasteful - it doesn’t try too hard.” Perforated super-soft Windsor leather upholstery extends from the door cards to the dash, and everywhere in between. The real brushed metal accents, heavily-lacquered piano black trim and ebony-coloured headliner are also attention grabbers. As Crawford says, “Forget business class folks, this is a genuine first-class experience.”

Inside, everything is electrically-operated, and the vehicle features three-zone climate control, including seat heating and cooling, a powered tailgate with gesture control, an electrically-adjustable steering column, and soft-close doors. The instrument display, infotainment and climate control are arrayed across three high-definition screens.

Crawford found the driving position “like no other. It’s high, with a commanding view of the road ahead and everything else around you”. The Range Rover Vogue also has “a tonne of space inside...when it comes to the boot it’s no contest”.


When it comes to performance, refinement and efficiency, in the Range Rover Vogue P400 Crawford says it’s all there. He believes that few would argue with the idea that the current Range Rover “is near to a perfect evolution of an automotive icon”, and it’s a vehicle he views as still being the benchmark in the full-sized luxury SUV segment. He concludes his review by saying, “The Range Rover is almost a segment all on its own, and notoriously difficult to compare.”


As a mild-hybrid, the Range Rover Vogue P400 joins Land Rover’s growing hybrid line-up. Coming soon, the best-selling Range Rover Evoque and Land Rover Discovery Sport will be available in Australia as efficient plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV), offering lower emissions and fuel consumption.
