The launch of Land Rover’s highly anticipated 2022 Defender V8 has already created anticipation in the motoring press, with the enhanced Defender set to offer a thrilling blend of performance and capability, along with greater levels of driver engagement both on and off-road.

CarExpert says the announcement confirms “one of motoring’s worst-kept secrets”, with both the Defender 90 and Defender 110 available with the 5.0-litre supercharged V8 engine, pumping out 386kW of power and 625Nm of torque. The site points out that the smaller, lighter Defender 90 will hit 100km/h in 5.2 seconds and top out at 240km/h, which it describes as “hot hatch numbers”. The West Australian says the new engines deliver “a serious boost in power”, while Carsales calls the new V8 “thunderous” and “thumping”. CarAdvice notes, “While previous generations of the Land Rover Defender have had V8 power, this is the first with supercharged grunt, making it the most powerful Defender of all time – in its 73-year history.”

The bespoke suspension set-up for improved handling is a highlight for CarAdvice, with CarExpert in agreement: “Under the skin, the V8 rides on retuned air suspension with a ‘Dynamic’ mode to make it feel more agile than its siblings”. The electronic rear differential is able to keep the car in check at the limits of grip.

The Defender V8 will feature exclusive exterior badging, quad exhausts, and Xenon Blue front brake callipers clamped around 20-inch discs. Meanwhile, inside the vehicle CarExpert explains, “The cabin is differentiated with unique suede accents, a satin black finish for the cross bar, and Alcantara trim for the steering wheel”. The wider Defender range now has the option of a larger screen for the infotainment system, with a 11.4-inch screen available for the first time.

The fastest and most dynamically rewarding Defender yet, and the pinnacle of the Defender family, is due in Australian showrooms in July.
