Jeremy Clarkson, renowned car enthusiast and host of Top Gear and The Grand Tour, has always loved Range Rovers. He is a proud owner of two - an older classic “farm car”, and a four-year-old Vogue SE, which is a “bit plush” and used “mostly for going into London”. He was thrilled to receive the brand new 2021 D350 Vogue SE on loan for a week, which he recently reviewed in The Weekend Australian.

He believes Range Rover was designed 50 years ago to do two jobs: “You could use it on the farm during the day, and then, after hosing down the interior, use it at night to go to the opera. No other car has ever been able to pull that off.” In a car now so luxurious and refined, Clarkson finds it unthinkable to use it “for uprooting trees and transporting logs and pulling stranded tractors out of the ditch”. The 2021 model has evolved to include exceptional technology, powerful performance, and an ultimate level of refinement, with wider seating that’s upholstered in the finest leather.


Despite the reduced engine size, he’s impressed that they’re even more powerful “thanks to all manner of electronic trickery and hybrid tech”. And in the diesel D350, you get all the tech you need and an environmentally friendly 13km to the litre. “More impressive still”, Clarkson says, “is the way this new car glides. It has the same suspension set-up as before, so it must be the seats, or fairy dust, but something makes it uncannily comfortable.” He also finds driving the D350 absolute fun.

While the 2021 Range Rover is more than capable of taking on the toughest of off-road tasks, Clarkson feels the Range Rover should no longer be judged as a dual-purpose car and says, “It’s so good at doing the opera part of its job that we can ignore the fact it’s now too posh to do farming.” And his rating? Clarkson happily gives the Range Rover D350 Vogue SE five stars.
